Tim Burgess YouTube Mix

A little while ago Tim Burgess made Field Day Blog an epic YouTube mix. It’s no understatement to say it’s one of the best we’ve ever read and explored, with tons of amazing tips, stories and visuals involved. Have a read of the whole thing re-published below…

Tim Burgess plays Islington Assembly Hall for us on Monday 21st October.

Crime and City Solution - My Love Takes Me There

It gives me the same feeling as Godspeed’s record did last year. The songs feel like they’ve been aged in oak caskets - almost pre-listened to. This album sounded like I already knew them, already liked them. How do they do that? I’m not sure but I love it. The whole album is hugely warm and massively fearless, My Love Takes Me There is instantly recognisable and then it becomes a stone cold classic from the second listen onwards.

Link Wray - Be What You Want To

This could be a life changing song – everytime I listen to it I pretend it’s the first time I have ever heard it. Like that bloke in Memento. I need me a Link Wray tattoo on my leg to remind me

Beastie Boys - Get it Together

Hey lets keep this Rollin’ I got a bag of coffee to get through. My band, The Charlatans played with the Beastie Boys a few times Bremerton WA, and Kawasaki on the outskirts of Tokyo are two of a few more that I would have to look up….Anyway, Check Your Head is one of my all time favourite LPs of all time. This is from Ill communication the one that came directly after, and if there is a lead track its probably not this one its probably Sabotage but, hey, this has the line Ill communication in the song and guess what it’s just come on my ipod?

Lemonheads - My Drug Buddy

Evan Dando was king, he was the heart throb this album - it’s a shame about ray is his best this was the song of the summer of 92. Nobody could ever seem so cool while being so wasted.

Deep time – Clouds

Not sure how but I came across this via the drummer in The Gossip. Or is it just Gossip? Anyway, Beth Ditto’s band. I think the drummer has a label that this song’s on. That’s a vague description but this isn’t wikipedia. Maybe just listen to the song and see if you can come up with some better notes

Raekwon the Chef - Glaciers of Ice

Back in the mid 90’s I was a monster for the Wu. I bought this in Camden on 12” the day it came out the video is pretty good too from what I can remember. They’ve really stood the test of time. Surely there’s no other band with so many major players - The Polyphonic Spree might have them on sheer numbers but pound for pound it’s The Wu Tang Clan

The Rangers - Sacred Cows

Definite Wooze Warped LA Dreaminess – that’s a pretty bad description you could say it’s a lo-fi trip I am not sure whether they are from LA in truth but they are on Not Not Fun. A Fine Label. Anyway if you play this record all the way through it has an ability to seem that there is only one song ? It feels like 90 mins of the same song you might not like that but in this case it’s a good thing

Robert Wyatt – Heaps of Sheeps

Just unbelievable, beautiful groove, intelligent with an English sensibility that nobody can mimic. Produced by Eno what, else can I say.

Arthur Russell – Calling out of Context

AR Is my favourite artist these days it could be any of his but I thought why not this one its such a great title – on my last tour we did a cover of I Couldn’t Say It To Your Face and whenever you hear one of Arthur Russell’s songs, you just get transported somewhere else. Until the end of the record, then you’re back where you were.

Bill Callahan – Riding For A Feeling

I Don’t know why I chose this one maybe its because apocalypse is probably the darkest of his solo work I love Bill Callahan. Nobody does introspection like Bill.

Factory Floor – Fall Back

Well I have seen this band progress and collapse and build themselves back up again and progress and take a step sideways and then collapse and build themselves up again. Sometimes watching in awe, sometimes in frustration but I feel I live with this band in many ways. And breathed them – they’re my favourite band since I walked in on them at a Horrors show at The Electric Ballroom in Camden (they were opening) I have been under their spell.

I have roadied for them and the only other band I would consider being a roadie for is Lambchop. Oh, and Chris and Cosey too.

And what a song this one is genius in its simplicity sounding like no one else in the world

R. Stevie Moore – I Go into your mind

I heard about R. Stevie Moore and the more I heard, the more I loved what he did - and what he’d done was more than 400 albums. I tracked him down and we ate pizza, drank coffee and he played on my album. I sang backing vocals and played percussion in his band. This song is one of my favourite songs in the world. I put out a (Kind of) Best of.. on OGenesis last year and the version of this song that I wanted was just too heartbreaking for RSM to let me have as it featured someone who was no longer in his life.

New Order – Your Silent Face

My number 1 song of all time: melancholic, funny, timeless, still brooding, majestic all these words just roll of the tongue and harmonise with the sound this song. But you don’t need me to tell you that.

Cat Power – Manhattan

Cat is great one of my favourite singers of our time – I seen her many times and the gigs are all one offs. Each time she’s released an album, I’ve dashed out to buy it on the first day. You never quite know where she’s headed but you definitely want to go there.

The Charlatans - We’re not on the Same Trip

Most people think I stole the name of my band from these guys – its not true, we didn’t know til John Peel mentioned it. And we really thought we knew our psych.

The Fall – Cyber Insekt

How could a band formed in 1977 bring out their best LP in 2000 ? Brilliant, brilliant album

Any other day I would’ve picked Dr Buck’s Letter , or Two Librans or Hot Runes all from the same album but today its Cyber Insekt – Mark E Smith is like no other but maybe like Johnny Cash he will probably make his best albums on his death bed, what I am trying to say is, he will probably surpass this The Unutterable in about 20 years time.

It’s like Mark E Smith has been around forever and he just doesn’t seem to fade. I saw them live a few months ago and they were more ferocious than pretty much anyone I’ve seen in the last few years. He just never lets his guard down and is always jabbing away

Julian Cope – Mic Mak Mok.

Think you can only find the demo on youtube but the finished version of this is on the Sunspots EP.

This is acid drenched dope, Cope.

Lower Dens – Brains

Brains is my favourite from Nootropics. I don’t know much about them - except that I really like them and I added them on twitter

Pavlov’s Children – Repeat Prescription

Found them where they didn’t want to get found. Forwarded to me by Nik Colk Coid from Factory Floor

Asked them if they wanted to put out a record on my label O Genesis. They did and I am proud to present ……OGen 026

Peter Gordon & Love of Life Orchestra – Beautiful Dreamer (FD - This one disappeared so we replaced it with another excellent PG and Love of Life Orchestra tune!)

Met Peter when he played in London last year. He’s Brilliant - a New Yorker who played alongside and was very good friends with Arthur Russell – If you don’t have love of life orchestra LPs buy them now . This is a classic.

Cartertuttivoid – v3 (edit)

Best record of last year Chris Carter’s grinding tribal rhythms and Cosey Fanni Tutti’s wailing

It don’t get much better. Or, in fact, any better

Velvet Underground Live with Lou REED, VOL 1 – What Goes On

Supposedly Recorded by a fan on a 2 track and surfaced in 1974 just after lou reeds solo career had taken off with Transformer

It’s my favourite recording of all time live a couple of mics and minimal glitch totally primitive and the only reason its so good is that the band were so on fire.

Throbbing Gristle – The Old Man Smiled

Just filthy primitive and vital you get really used to the broken sounds and the distorted rhythms

CRASS – Punk is dead

Became friends with Penny and Gee it was one of the greatest moment in my life Crass are one of the first bands I ever in Winsford Cheshire, I was still at school, saw it could’ve been any but this is just brilliant Crass were the best punk band

Syd Barrett – Rats

Genius minimal and the opposite of the increasingly bloating Pink Floyd - he was everything they weren’t. A punk. The Floyd flame for starters. Turned into Muse when he left.

Sonic Youth - Disconnection Notice

Brilliant video love SY. Are you still reading this? Let’s just settle on the idea the Sonic Youth are just ace.
